December 10, 2007 Fake Drugs and XStream Systems' Solution
Featured on Fox News
The number of counterfeit medications in America and a possible solution to protect consumers was
broadcast across the nation today. FOX News Channel aired a feature on XStream Systems and the unit
which can authenticate questionable medications.
The story discussed the significant issues surrounding counterfeit medications within the domestic
supply chain and the use of technology, such as EDXRD and the XT250 System as a solution. With this unit,
manufacturers, distributors, and dispensers can verify the contents of pharmaceutical containers without
breaking their seal. In addition the airing captured the evolution of the XT250 System over the years.
The FOX News Channel correspondent on the case was Orlando Salinas. Also featured was Alan Clock,
Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at XStream Systems. “We were contacted by FOX about a
possible visit to our headquarters and our expertise regarding the scope of counterfeiting within the US,”
stated Clock. “Ultimately, the news footage proved to be a great way to present our solution to a large
audience.”
In his report, Salinas cited the WHO (World Health Organization) regarding the increasing scope of
counterfeit medications and ICE (Immigration Customs Enforcement). This year, ICE has investigated
over 200 cases of smuggling of prescription medications and over 650 foreign internet sites that sell
into the United States.

November 30, 2007 The Need to Protect America's Pharmaceutical Supply
As America’s consumption of pharmaceuticals increases,
so must methods to thwart the counterfeit drug market. In 2006, prescription sales in the US
pharmaceutical market increased by 8.3% and in 2007, similar growth is anticipated.
Global industry experts agree that on average 10% of the world’s
drug supply is considered counterfeit, adulterated or otherwise fraudulent. With Americans purchasing
44% of all pharmaceuticals sold worldwide last year, if only 1% of the US drug supply was tainted it would
equal 34.2 million prescriptions that are potentially life threatening. This equates to approximately one
counterfeit prescription for every nine American citizens in 2006 alone.
The World Health Organization’s Anti-Counterfeiting Taskforce has
stated “technologies are particularly important for product authentication.” To fill a need for a high-tech
solution, scientists and engineers at a Florida-based company have developed a unit which can help maintain
the integrity of the pharmaceutical supply chain. The XT250TM System by XStream Systems, Inc. is the first
of its kind and can verify the contents of a manufacturer’s original unit of sale, without breaking the
seal or opening the package. When placed at distribution checkpoints or warehouse facilities, the unit
is able to determine fraudulent medications from legitimate inventory, thus protecting the consumer.
A study by the Center for Medicine in the Public Interest cited by the
WHO estimates the number of counterfeits will climb to be a $75 billion industry by the year 2010,
representing a 92% increase from 2005. John Lundquist, XStream Systems’ VP of Business Development states
“As the threat of consumers being harmed by counterfeit drugs grows, we need to increase the number of
safeguards throughout the pharmaceutical supply chain. The XT250 System is the most robust technology of
a new generation of necessary anti-counterfeiting solutions.”

September 12, 2007 Identifying Imported Counterfeit Drugs
A Florida-based company has begun selling a piece of equipment which can detect
counterfeit drugs in the U.S. pharmaceutical supply chain. XStream Systems, Inc. developed a unit to identify dangerous
pharmaceuticals in circulation to protect the public by authenticating these medications before they reach the
consumer.
The threat of Americans swallowing counterfeit medications is increasing each
year. The World Health Organization has stated trade in fake medicines is more prevalent in countries with weak drug
regulation and enforcement, scarcity or erratic supply of basic medicines, unregulated markets and unaffordable prices.
But as counterfeiting becomes more sophisticated, these products are increasingly present even in better controlled
markets. Daniel M. Durand, VP of Sales for XStream Systems says “Some undeveloped nations see regions where circulated
counterfeit pharmaceutical rates soar into the high 30th percentile – to protect the public, we need to take action
and make sure medications are validated before consumption.”
XStream Systems’ unit authenticates a drug while still in its sealed container.
The “fingerprint” of each drug is completely unique, so questionable medications can be compared to the actual drug’s
fingerprint. To do this, an operator places a bottle into the unit and presses the “start” button on a touch screen.
The molecular crystal structure of the drug is then examined and compared against stored data to receive a “passed”
or “failed” message
To date, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has initiated over 178
criminal investigations of pharmaceutical smuggling. These investigations have targeted over 650 websites and
millions of dosage units of counterfeit, adulterated, misbranded and unapproved pharmaceuticals – all available
to American consumers.
XStream Systems’ unit is the first of its kind.
XStream Systems, Inc.
XStream Systems produces next-generation equipment for material identification.
Their patented systems are based on Energy-Dispersive X-Ray Diffraction (EDXRD) technology. The company’s XT250™ System
enables testing of powders, pills AND entire sealed bottles. The equipment’s superior sample penetration allows the
identification of contents inside opaque plastic, cardboard and even metal packaging.

XT250 (Field Test Plan) Independent Lab Test Plan – Phase II
Executive Summary
This report is being submitted to satisfy a contractual agreement and contains
the results of an independent evaluation of a technology developed by XStream Systems, Inc. (Vero Beach, FL).
The evaluation was performed by the Florida Technical Division of Midwest
Research Institute (Palm Bay, FL). The purpose of this independent evaluation was to test the sensitivity and specificity
of the XStream Systems, Inc. XT250 Material Recognition System Engine in identifying known prescription drugs based on
simple pass/fail criteria.
Combiviv 150/300, Epivir 150, Viagra 100, Truvada 200/300, and Hyzaar 50/12.5 were provided
by XStream Systems, Inc and pills were dispensed into sample vials. An MRI scientist performed all testing at the XStream Systems, Inc.
facility. The instrument was programmed to identify all 5 of the test samples and testing was conducted over a six day period. The
evaluation consisted of 50 independent runs performed on each of the five samples used in this analysis with the instrument programmed
for positive identification and 50 independent runs on each of the five samples with the instrument programmed for misidentification
for a total of 500 measurements. Equal volumes (18.5 cm3) of each sample were exposed for 5 minutes.
The results showed that the XT250 accurately identified 97.2% of the positive samples (N=250).
The instrument accurately identified 249 out of 250 negative samples, demonstrating a specificity of 99.6%. The overall efficiency
(accuracy) of the diagnostic test, defined as the percentage of samples correctly classified, was 98.4%; 492 out of the 500 samples.
The calculated probability of the XT250 correctly classifying these drugs was 0.986.
Statistical analysis by a Chi Squared Test demonstrated there was no statistically significant difference between the observed
results and the expected results, X2YATES (1, N=500) = 0.100, p=0.752. These test results indicate that the XStream Systems Inc.
XT250 Material Recognition System Engine accurately classified 492 out of 500 drug samples in this evaluation.
