August 18, 2008 XStream Systems Introduces Its Technology to NCPD Membership
XStream Systems presented its unique authentication technology at the National Coalition of Pharmaceutical Distributors 3rd Annual Meeting in Las Vegas on August 12th. The NCPD meeting was held in conjunction with the Pharmacy Purchasing Outlook Meeting held at the Las Vegas Hilton.
Alan Clock, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing and John Lundquist, Vice President of Sales and Business Development, introduced XStream Systems’ revolutionary authentication technology which allows a pharmaceutical distributor to verify the contents of individual units of sale, inside its sealed container. XStream’s solution allows distributors to authenticate products in both the receiving and returns functions. This process of verification allows the individual or corporate entity to properly secure itself from adulterated, contaminated or counterfeit medications.
“This was a great opportunity to meet with a critical component of the domestic pharmaceutical supply chain” stated Clock. “NCPD members have largely been excluded from the regulatory debate which has left them disadvantaged by the current solutions of Track and Trace technologies. Our authentication technology exceeds the functionality of Track and Trace, but does not rely on a complex transactional process. This is a perfect solution for the average NCPD member.”

April 9, 2008 Company Offers Unit which can Verify Drug Ingredients
A pharmaceutical authentication company is now selling equipment which can verify drug ingredients outside of a laboratory. XStream Systems, Inc. offers a unit which can read the molecular structure of medicines without having to open any packaging or break a bottle’s seal.
Named the XT250 System, its underlying technology was originally developed to protect the public from terrorist threats, but has since found its role in the pharmaceutical industry. It can tell if a drug is counterfeit, altered, contaminated, or otherwise different on a molecular level from its intended form.
“This unit is of great benefit when dealing with drugs or ingredients from questionable sources, such as what we’ve seen from China in the recent Heparin incident,” stated John Lundquist, VP of Business Development for XStream Systems. “The fact it can test drugs when they are still in the manufacturer’s packaging makes the system even more valuable to companies trying to keep their outbound shipments clean.”
The XT250 System is currently being used at multiple locations in the pharmaceutical supply network, checking inventories for dangerous products.
March 7, 2008 Editorial Series on Counterfeit Drug Liability Released
A four part opinion series of articles on supply chain liability within the pharmaceutical industry is now available to the public. The write-up covers how each segment of the US drug supply network questions where counterfeit drug liability lies.
Alan Clock, a 20 year veteran of the pharmaceutical industry, authored the series. “Nobody wants to be responsible for a passing on, ultimately to the consumer, counterfeit or fake medications,” Clock said. “The current reality is that every member of the pharmaceutical supply chain should be responsible and do everything possible to protect the public. Those members who haven’t adopted or embraced new technologies to authenticate or protect their inventories will appear as the weak link and be very vulnerable to those with a nefarious intent and liability.”
The final installment of the series covers a new piece of equipment which is being offered as a solution to mitigate risk within the pharmaceutical industry. The XT250 Authentication System from XStream Systems, Inc. verifies pharmaceuticals at a crystalline level and while in their original sealed packaging. The equipment can assist manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers, and dispensers when having to defend themselves over products which left their facilities.

A report titled Pharmaceutical Counterfeiting; a Global Healthcare
Menace: a New Technology Tool has been released. Written with six
different sub-categories, it is the newest information to date from
XStream Systems, Inc., an authentication solution company based in the
United States.
Noted subjects within the report include categories of counterfeits, the
outsourcing of pharmaceutical manufacturing and ingredient processing, and
the dramatic increase of fake medicine cases worldwide.
The white paper also addresses current measures to fight global
pharmaceutical counterfeiting and technological solutions aimed at
minimizing the public’s risks.
The author, Alan Clock stated “Americans trust the
pharmaceutical industry and our supply chain with their health. To retain
that trust, high-tech options must be taken into consideration when
developing ways to keep a growing problem from causing consumers to loose
faith in the authenticity of their medications.”
To view the new report in its entirety,

The
number of counterfeit medications in America and a possible solution to
protect consumers was broadcast across the nation today. FOX News Channel
aired a feature on XStream Systems and the unit which can authenticate
questionable medications.
The
story discussed the significant issues surrounding counterfeit medications
within the domestic supply chain and the use of technology, such as EDXRD
and the XT250 System as a solution. With this unit, manufacturers,
distributors, and dispensers can verify the contents of pharmaceutical
containers without breaking their seal. In addition the airing captured the
evolution of the XT250 System over the years.
The FOX
News Channel correspondent on the case was Orlando Salinas. Also featured
was Alan Clock, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at XStream
Systems. “We were contacted by FOX about a possible visit to our
headquarters and our expertise regarding the scope of counterfeiting within
the US,” stated Clock. “Ultimately, the news footage proved to be a great
way to present our solution to a large audience.”
In his report, Salinas cited the WHO (World Health Organization) regarding
the increasing scope of counterfeit medications and ICE (Immigration Customs
Enforcement). This year, ICE has investigated over 200 cases of smuggling
of prescription medications and over 650 foreign internet sites that sell
into the United States.
As America’s
consumption of pharmaceuticals increases, so must methods to thwart the
counterfeit drug market. In 2006, prescription sales in the US
pharmaceutical market increased by 8.3% and in 2007, similar growth is
anticipated.
Global industry experts agree that on average 10% of
the world’s drug supply is considered counterfeit, adulterated or otherwise
fraudulent. With Americans purchasing 44% of all pharmaceuticals sold
worldwide last year, if only 1% of the US drug supply was tainted it would
equal 34.2 million prescriptions that are potentially life threatening. This
equates to approximately one counterfeit prescription for every nine
American citizens in 2006 alone.
The World Health Organization’s Anti-Counterfeiting
Taskforce has stated “technologies are particularly important for product
authentication.” To fill a need for a high-tech solution, scientists and
engineers at a Florida-based company have developed a unit which can help
maintain the integrity of the pharmaceutical supply chain. The XT250TM
System by XStream Systems, Inc. is the first of its kind and can verify the
contents of a manufacturer’s original unit of sale, without breaking the
seal or opening the package. When placed at distribution checkpoints or
warehouse facilities, the unit is able to determine fraudulent medications
from legitimate inventory, thus protecting the consumer.
A study by the Center for Medicine in the Public
Interest cited by the WHO estimates the number of counterfeits will climb to
be a $75 billion industry by the year 2010, representing a 92% increase from
2005. John Lundquist, XStream Systems’ VP of Business Development states “As
the threat of consumers being harmed by counterfeit drugs grows, we need to
increase the number of safeguards throughout the pharmaceutical supply
chain. The XT250 System is the most robust technology of a new generation of
necessary anti-counterfeiting solutions.”
XStream Systems, Inc.
announced
the addition of another key individual assisting the rollout of their
pharmaceutical authentication technology. John Lundquist has joined
the company
as Vice President of Sales and Business
Development.
Mr. Lundquist will report to Alan Clock, the
Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing.
Mr.
Lundquist will be responsible for large enterprise sales and business
development efforts for XStream Systems.
“John’s experience is the perfect fit for
XStream Systems,” stated Clock. “We feel that he will be able to place our
product and its technology further into the healthcare supply chain.”
Mr. Lundquist joins XStream Systems with a strong
track record of experience in pharmaceutical sales, business development,
operations, supply chain and group purchasing management. Prior to joining
the XStream Systems team, Mr. Lundquist directed a national
Specialty/Biotech Distribution enterprise.
Mr. Lundquist is an
expert strategist and negotiator known for pioneering new business tactics
and partnerships aimed at pharmaceutical supply chain solutions. He has also
held executive positions with Managed Healthcare Associates,
AmerisourceBergen and Fujisawa USA.
Brian Mayo, President of XStream Systems, Inc., a Florida based
material identification company, announced the addition of
Alan Clock
as Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing.
In
the position of Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Mr. Clock will
be responsible for directing all sales and marketing efforts for XStream
Systems.
“Alan brings us a great amount of experience and expertise in the
pharmaceutical and healthcare provider markets,” stated Mayo. “We feel that
our product and its technology are the perfect fit for the healthcare supply
chain and the many issues that they have as they source products globally.
Alan gives us the contacts and credibility to properly provide our solution
to these markets and others.”
Mr. Clock joins XStream Systems with wealth of experience in sales and sales
management primarily dealing with healthcare services, systems and
solutions. He has held senior sales executive and national account roles for
industry leaders; AmerisourceBergen, McKesson, Cardinal Health and
ActiveHealth Management.
“I am excited about
this ground breaking technology and being at the forefront of providing
solutions to an uncertain global supply chain,” stated Clock. “XStream’s
first generation product, the XT250™ System is perfectly suited to help
authenticate materials at vulnerable spots along the supply chain
network.”
A
Florida-based company has begun selling a piece of equipment which can
detect counterfeit drugs in the U.S. pharmaceutical supply chain. XStream
Systems, Inc. developed a unit to identify dangerous pharmaceuticals
in circulation to protect the public by authenticating these
medications before they reach the consumer.
The threat of Americans swallowing counterfeit medications is increasing
each year. The World Health Organization has stated trade in fake medicines
is more prevalent in countries with weak drug regulation and enforcement,
scarcity or erratic supply of basic medicines, unregulated markets and
unaffordable prices. But as counterfeiting becomes more sophisticated, these
products are increasingly present even in better controlled markets. Daniel
M. Durand, VP of Sales for XStream Systems says “Some undeveloped nations
see regions where circulated counterfeit pharmaceutical rates soar into the
high 30th percentile – to protect the public, we need to take
action and make sure medications are validated before consumption.”
XStream Systems’ unit authenticates a drug while still in its sealed
container. The “fingerprint” of each drug is completely unique, so
questionable medications can be compared to the actual drug’s fingerprint.
To do this, an operator places a bottle into the unit and presses the
“start” button on a touch screen. The molecular crystal structure of the
drug is then examined and compared against stored data to receive a “passed”
or “failed” message.
To
date, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has initiated over 178
criminal investigations of pharmaceutical smuggling. These investigations
have targeted over 650 websites and millions of dosage units of counterfeit,
adulterated, misbranded and unapproved pharmaceuticals – all available to
American consumers.
XStream Systems’ unit is the first of its kind.

June 14th, 2007 Phase II of Independent Laboratory Evaluations
The XStream Systems XT250 Material
Identification System has completed phase II of independent testing. Once
again, the results have proven the accuracy of the unit. This particular
round of testing was completed using some prescription medications prone to
counterfeiting:
XT250 (Field
Test Plan) Independent Lab Test Plan – Phase II Executive Summary.
This report is being submitted to
satisfy a contractual agreement and contains the results of an independent
evaluation of a technology developed by XStream Systems, Inc. (Vero Beach,
FL). The evaluation was performed by the Florida Technical Division of
Midwest Research Institute (Palm Bay, FL). The purpose of this independent
evaluation was to test the sensitivity and specificity of the XStream
Systems, Inc. XT250 Material Recognition System Engine in identifying known
prescription drugs based on simple pass/fail criteria. Combiviv 150/300,
Epivir 150, Viagra 100, Truvada 200/300, and Hyzaar 50/12.5 were provided by
XStream Systems, Inc and pills were dispensed into sample vials. An MRI
scientist performed all testing at the XStream Systems, Inc. facility. The
instrument was programmed to identify all 5 of the test samples and testing
was conducted over a six day period. The evaluation consisted of 50
independent runs performed on each of the five samples used in this analysis
with the instrument programmed for positive identification and 50
independent runs on each of the five samples with the instrument programmed
for misidentification for a total of 500 measurements. Equal volumes (18.5
cm3) of each
sample were exposed for 5 minutes. The results showed that the XT250
accurately identified 97.2% of the positive samples (N=250). The instrument
accurately identified 249 out of 250 negative samples, demonstrating a
specificity of 99.6%. The overall efficiency (accuracy) of the diagnostic
test, defined as the percentage of samples correctly classified, was 98.4%;
492 out of the 500 samples. The calculated probability of the XT250
correctly classifying these drugs was 0.986. Statistical analysis by a Chi
Squared Test demonstrated there was no statistically significant difference
between the observed results and the expected results, X2YATES
(1, N=500) = 0.100, p=0.752. These test results indicate that
the XStream Systems Inc. XT250 Material Recognition System Engine accurately
classified 492 out of 500 drug samples in this evaluation.
Vero Beach, FL— Businesses
across the nation have begun reading about a company offering a high-tech
